Looks like a fog-covered-mountain or something.
Yep, definitely a fog-covered-mountain. An Alaskan fog-covered-mountain.
And another.
And another.
I'm sure this is the "Strait of Something Cool", but I don't remember what.
Yet another pool.
A waterfall.
Juneau appears out of the fog...
Juneau is getting closer...
Almost at Juneau, looking south.
Cool clouds.
Downtown Juneau.
Cool floatplanes parked in front of the cruise ship terminal.
The people on the Holland ship had to ferry back and forth to the dock in the little boat in the bottom right corner. Bummer.
Float plane going somewhere.
More downtown Juneau.
I can't find good Mexican food in Seattle to save my life. This place in Juneau is quite good, though.
Our ride.
Big, huh?
That guy looks just like me.
Out on the water going whale watching.
No whales yet.
It was chilly out on the water.
Julia!
Julia, with her best friend (coffee).
Our first sea creatures! Sea lions fighting to get on the bouy.
More guys going whale-watching.
Still more...
There be whales here!
I like this one.
These dudes are big.
Thar she blows!
Julia taking a picture of me taking a picture of her.
Julia gettin' whale shots.
Purty, ain't it?
Nice
Out of the blue, six whales came up right next to our boat. You could almost reach out and touch them.
I know, it's a lot of whale tails...
Our whale guide told us this lighthouse is scheduled to become a bed and breakfast. Cool! I could wake up to this view for a long time without getting tired of it.
A pretty sailboat in the distance.
When I get a boat, I want a boat like this.
Pretty decent, yes?
The Mendenhall Glacier.
There's an eagle there in the middle if you look closely. I had my 17-35mm lens with me at the time we went by this guy, and couldn't zoom in any closer.
Julia ran down to grab a longer lens for me, but by then, it was too late.
We ended up seeing so many bald eagles in AK, it started to get kind of old. Never thought that would happen.
Mr. Eagle decides he likes that other tree over there better.
Man, what I wouldn't have given to have had my 500mm lens with me right then...
This dude flew over shortly after Julia brought me a long lens. You can see all the dust on my CCD. Time to take the camera in for the annual cleaning...
Almost back to the doc.
Our bus broke down on the way back to the ship, so we stopped here for a bit. That's the glacier again in the background. At least it was a pretty place to be stuck.
Julia caught me using the old camera. I brought my ancient Nikon FM2 as a backup to the D1x. I figured that if I used both, I could lose either my digital pictures or my film pictures, and still come home with neat stuff.
Julia playing with some macro shots.
Here's the sign with info about the glacier.
Finally back in Juneau after they sent another bus and a mechanic to fetch us.
This is the Roberts Tram. I should remember how high it is, but I don't. It was made in France. After having worked on French cars before, "Made in France" means "Danger, designed by idiots" to me.
On the way up.
Cool view through the rain.
Ok, this was a failed attempt to get a picture of the cool trees as we went up.
Slightly better, but still a poor picture.
The tram driver and a couple other passengers.
The whole way up, I kept thinking about the James Bond movie where Roger Moore fights with the huge guy on top of the cable car gondola.
Cool view up the valley.
Looking back down the way we came. Cool, eh?
The view from the top was awesome.
The woods sure were pretty up on top of the hill.
Our ship from the top.
Beware of the blob.
There were tons of float planes coming and going. Warning, way too many float plane pictures to follow...
